:: Tiring practical... ::

oh goodness... today my 8hrs prac is so pathetic... so many hectic procedures, to yield 0.0387g of product (only 30% yield)... well, i am 1 of the lucky ones in my group already... some of us cant even recover 0.02g of compound...

it is a blessing dat we started off part A of the experiment to synthesize metal-free porphyrin, dat took 2 hrs... today, we have wrapped up part B & C... part B required a series of heating steps... from reaction, product extraction, low intense removal of solvent and high intense removal of another solvent... haha... i think my solvent extraction process was quite well done and attracted alot of attention from my peers... keke... my aqueous phase (water) was totally clean and clear... while the others haf a dull yellow aqueous phase. somehow... it pressurized them to do more than the required 3 times for solvent extraction... in the end, they spend more time removing the solvent than me...

the worse thing is... only 1 machine is available for the high intense drying... many of us spent quite some time waiting... lucky for me, i was the 2nd to use the device... coz i got less solvent than the rest... keke... ops, think i sabo them in an indirect way...

the next step was column separation... we ran our product thru a column of silica gel with toluene:hexane mixture... as the collected sample is a composition of different compounds... they will each travel at different rate along the silica gel column. as the compound dat we are interested in is bright red in color... so we only collected the region dat is red in color... guess wat... everyone collected abt 1L of the bright red liquid and evapourate the solvent off to only 10mL... my goodness~! 1L to 10mL... so we all spent abt 1-2hrs on concentrating the bright red compound...

in the end, only such a small amount of product was being fabricated... so sad... & tiring... yawnz...

:: I'm impressed... ::

harbourfront is usually a stop by pt for me, then i will usually take a stroll back home from dere. very often, i will come across many bangala workers and tourists... very often, i will offer my help to tourists, if i ever see them in doubt.

likewise for yesterday, i saw a blonde hair couple standing at the junction and a big map with them. i interrupted them and offered my assistance... according to them, they were trying to reach Shangri-la hotel at Orchard rd. hence, i told them to take bus 65.

rejecting my suggestion, they wanna walk to orchard rd from harbourfront... i was impressed but i also warned them dat the journey may take up to 2hrs... ha... wondering how i know it? well... i tried it before when i was in sec4. then both of them showed me the passion they have for walking. at the same time, they can get to see the surroundings in a better view too... i guess it's the difference in culture ba... in SG, we are drilled dat time is very impt. hence, many of us are moving in a faster pace... at the same time, we failed to appreciate and missed out many things dat are moving passed us.

i followed the couple for a while, till we hit the junction near my house. along the way, we chat... i guess many Americans would miss chewing gums in SG ba... so they asked where can they get it... sadly, chewing gums were banned in SG for more than 10+yrs already... i can still recall the reasons why chewing gums were banned at dat time... dark patches of used chewing gums were seen here and dere, creating an awful sights in the public area. if u are unlucky, u may get in contact with a fresh one too... pretty digusting rite... also, some jokers threw used chewing gums into the mrt track and ceased the service. well, we can see how inconsiderate Singaporeans can be at dat time... i think chewing gums can only be allowed for sale in SG, only if Singaporeans learnt how to be more considerate. i can say dat we r haf improved but still quite some way to go too.

1 of the gd way to see how considerate we haf become, can be seen in public toilets, except those which are very well-maintained by cleaners... basically, toilets is the most commonly-used places, shared by the majority. also, it is often the place being neglected by us, but it is so impt to us. we valued it when we haf the need, and totally forget abt it once it over... i dun haf to evaluate further on the need rite? keke... we often carry the thoughts dat it's the cleaners' job to maintain it and they are paid to do so... but how many of us would think dat how mentally challenging it is for one for clean up our mess, enduring the smell and tolerate the disgusting sights for such a low paid job... and cant each of us play our part to reduce their workload... do we really have to rely on posters and champaigns to drill us to be more considerate... we are humans, we should be able to think more and spare more thoughts for others too... i guess, this world will not improve, if we cant get our people to be considerate... humans... pls learn and educate each other to be considerate... :)

:: Dyeing my hair... ::

ha... currently hiding in Jason's pgp rm to wait for Mervyn to come & dye my hair... oh no, it's my 1st time doing it lehz... think i can trust Mervyn ba... afterall, he always dye his hair 1... furthermore, it's very nice of him to make a trip to pgp, then off he go to settle his personal stuff and will be back to pgp again to check out on the results... oh yes, not to 4get abt Jason for lending his rm to me to dye my hair... ShaoWei should feel bad lehz... :P

the process of dyeing my hair is quite interesting and a totally new experience... thank to Mervyn who is quite experience, he warned me abt the pricking sensation when dyeing our hair. indeed, the pricking feeling was kinda unbearable... luckily, Jason's PC got some nice songs to divert my focus on my ears than on my head... keke...

the 1hr wait for the color to penetrate into my hair was kinda long... while waiting, i was trying to fix Jason's laser printer. unfortunately, i gave up after trying which means and ways i know of... Jason took over and found dat he actually forgot to connect his printer to the cpu... : ha... think i assumed dat Jason was not so blur to do so and i was wrong... also, with the color cream on my hair... it's not very convenient for me to bend down and check his cpu, which is on the floor... excuses excuses... for me to redeem myself... :P

yeah... as soon as 1hr passed, i took a relaxing and nice shower... cool, man... the hair color was very evenly spread across my hair... ha... if i got chance, will take a few photos ba... :)

:: Genki... ::

wat a torture for me today... 8hrs of inorganic chemistry expt... taking in enormous amount of ethanol, acetone, DMSO, chloroform vapor... all i ask for was to indulge myself with some nice hot green tea and some sushi... thnx goodness, dat i managed to drag Gen, Alex, Dennis & Shao Wei to go to genki sushi at yih along...

when i reach dere... gen was next to me, followed by Shao Wei & Dennis... while Alex is still on his way... maybe catching up some more glance at Lixian in clubrm 1st ba... lol... the next thing, i did was to make hot green tea for them... as i opened the lid of the green tea powder container... gen asked, "how come the wasabi here is dry 1"... my face went flat... i was trying to figure out whether is she trying to crack a joke out or she really dun know... then from her eyes, i can tell dat she dun know... normally, i would laugh until dere is no 2mr, but i was kinda too tired to do so... nevertheless, i still gave her a smile and explained to her nicely... this kinda attracted Shao Wei's attention and so he ask wat happened... so i told him wat gen complained on the dry wasashi earlier... Shao Wei's reply was, "then how come the wasashi are lidat..." my face went even more flat... suddenly, i seems to be the alien among of the 3 of us... instead of laughing at them, i turned out to be laughing at myself... again, i was too tired to show it out... my heart did laugh though... :)

the story did not end here... more things happened after everyone get their own cup of green tea... gen was commenting of the green tea residure in her cup and asked me if she can stir it using her chopsticks... to make fun of her, i said yes... without any hesitation, she used the thicker end of the chopsticks to stir her green tea... how native & i felt so bad dat i deceived her, while she believe totally in me... how evil, i was... again, Shao Wei grew curious... he wanna find out wat happened... so Gen and i did a replay of wat happened from words to actions... then Shao Wei commented dat Gen used the wrong side of the chopsticks to stir her green tea... this is the 4th combo hit on me within 10mins... i felt so out of the grp... so foreign... it was funny and interesting for me though...

yeah... during dat tea break... i drank 6+ cups of hot green tea and ate 6 plates of sushi... the feeling is so gd... i like to enjoy hot green tea alot in fact... made me feel so comfortable to force some sweat out... yokatta... tanoshi desu ne...

i haf been observing melee weapons since i watched 7 swords on the saturday of 2 weeks back... finally, made some observations here... haf anyone wondered why some blades are double-edged and single-edged... well, below is my pt of view...

double-edged blade:
the bigger version of such blades is very popular during the kings and knights era. where they wear thick armours to protect themselves from the cutting edge facing them, becoz the double-edged blade is too big and heavy...

for those who are using the middle to small sizes of this type of blade, often do not need to wear any metal armours... eg fighters in china... a standard type of this blade is commonly used in olden china... it is very much lighter and thin, as compared with those used by kings and knights... such blades are easier to control and less strength is needed to prevent urself being hurt by ur own blade...

the smallest class of these blades would be called dagger... commonly used by ninjas, hunters, malays etc... if u noticed here again, these groups of ppl do not need to wear any armour at all... instead they wear wateva they like when using dagger... the daggers used by malay warriors are more unique, it is designed with alot of curves on it... these daggers will leave a fatal wound on their enemies once they pulled their dagger out and let them bled to death... the bad thing of these daggers is... they cant be kept into normal covers and may accidentually hurt others too...

single-edged blades:
in eastern cultures, they are often much bigger than swords... eg the one Guan Gong used and "Tu Long Dao (Dragon Slayer Sabre)"... becoz if its weight, making it harder to control... they are only sharpened on 1-side only... such blades usually required to be controlled using 2 hands and can create a powerful wipe... the cutting force is contributed by the user's strength and weight of the blade, and the devastating blow is strong enough to break bones apart...

chopper and knives are the smaller class of this blade... they are more commonly found for cooking... keke... since only 1 side is used at each time, hence there is no need to sharpen both sides... there are also some cutting techinques, which requires the chief to hold the back of the knife, so this add more reason why only single-edged blades are used here...

last sat, i joined Vivian, Ling Fong & Chee Kin, and we took part in a hertiage walk in city area... wanna guess wat's our grp name? wat else... keke... Zoi~!! (our cs camp 2004 grp3 name)... our walk started from 5:15pm to 8pm and from fort canning till boat quay... we cleared a total of 39 stations (10 must clear stations and 29 optional stations)... arghz... we accidentually missed out 1 station by my folly... felt so bad over it... but in the end, we found out dat we actually need to clear 15 optional stations only... well, this is the 1st time... we took part in it ba... i was super on of this walk and i nearly wanna run from point to point... however, becoz got gers ard... so i got to tame down my emotions... taking in this walk made me feel young and filled with energy... keke... i was so hyper-active thruout...

when we reached the ending pt, alot of other teams were dere liao... then we went to a nearby coffeeshop to haf dinner and got back to boat quay to check out the winners for the lucky draw... when we reached back the ending pt... our timing was juz rite... we managed to catch the whole scene of the fireworks... though it was not as fanciful as NDP, it is gd enough to take our breaths away... the entire event ended at 9:30pm sharp... well, next yr... i will not miss it again... hopefully, can be the 1st team to arrive & win the special prize... according to Ling Fong, it's a $3K cash... keke... any takers??

oh oh... abt my left leg... it seems to have recovered again liao... phew... after giving it a rest on friday... i did expect it to turn bad after the walk... surprisingly, after sleeping the whole of sunday, it dun seem to hurt at all liao... yup, my leg sprain always magically recovered within a few days... well, not sure when will it be back again... keke... i will juz haf to be more careful ba...

:: Ouch, ouch, ouch... ::

woohoo... today went to do a 30-min survey at bugis area and received $30 for it... kewl... so my next stop was to sim lim and bought a new logitech wired keyboard and optical mouse set for only $36... so much for the $30 dat i earned... yup yup... i'm currently using it now :) i grew tired of wireless mouse liao... coz once every 2 months needs to replace the batteries *yawnz*... this keyboard is quite nice too, the tapping sound of the keyboard is very much softer than the old one, dat i'm using... keke... it's gd for me too. coz my bro always like to use the pc till very late, even when i am trying to get some beauty sleep... he got a habit of pressing the buttons very hard and loud... often disturb me to get myself to bed... so this keyboard and mouse set should be very valued for money to me... keke...

my next stop was to to heading for cs clubrm in sch... to help out in briefing our special projects of csc to our new volunteers... well, this is the place where the pain comes in... from quite a distance from the bus stop, i saw 197... knowing dat i will be late and not willing to miss the bus, i ran as fast as i could with a thick organic chemistry textbk is my bag and my new keyboard in my hands... phew, my efforts were not in vain and yup yup... i got on the bus... keke... then i noticed a stretching acute pain from my left ankle... i knew it, i must be sprained my old injury since army again... this is the 4th time, this sprain recurred to me again since this june... the 1st time was in the 2nd week of june (goodies bag packing day)... i jumped into the rubbish container to recover some anti-bacteria sprays with RenHong... well, the gd thing is at least i din slip and fall into the rubbish.. keke... the 2nd time was during sentosa finale run down... i was filming the whole event... i was deeply moved and motivated by the morale of all the campers. i neglected my injury and over-stretched it again... this is the main reason why i chose not to run away from the 105 water bombs (to subo pd and it happened to be my bd too) dat was prepared for it after it... keke... the 3rd time, was in the 1st week of july, when my sister fell onto my legs when i was sleeping... guess it's time for me to consult a specialist for it, else i will become more "lame" than ever... lol...

ya ya... i was very thankful that Clarice, ShunDeng and LG were willing to massage my leg. the force applied by Clarice is soft and ticklish... not hoping to initate another scandal also... i asked ShunDeng to take over... oh boy~! he applied the right amount of pressure and at the correct painful spot on my ankle... the pain was sharp but i felt very comfortable each time the pain went off... the point dat he pressed on, was actually a tendon... next comes, LG... he took over when ShunDeng got tired... LG pressed on another painful spot on my leg... this time round, it's a muscle... LG applied really alot of force and i nearly jumped out of my seat... still, i enjoyed the pain... keke... oh no... am i getting sadist here... lol... i liked to use laughter as a pain killer, to ease my pain... well, it works for me all along... keke...

much later, some of us had dinner at munchie monkey and watched project super star... while many others chose to go to clementi instead... i was feeling super hungry, so i ate 1 clayfish pasta, 1/2 plate of creamy pasta and 1 chocolate orea mondae... wow... i spent $13 on this meal... i have exceeded my daily pocket money for today liao... cant save 2mr... coz got night cycling with csc frenz and i promised Perry, dat i'll be down... then saturday going heritage trail with Ling Fong and Vivian, Vivian sponsored my admin fee for it... so nice... oh no~!! i cant give my leg and wallet, the rest dat they need... this is bad... jialat... & i actually wanna go for a swim during my 4hrs break 2mr...

keke... after dinner, i took a bus to harbourfront and took a 10mins walk backed home... yup... i was limping slightly thru out... keke... if come to worse case, i will give up the idea of swimming and night cycling 2mr... speaking of cycling... keke... my 3rd uncle from my mother's side... said dat he will give me a free bicycle... woah... so nice.... :) guess today is still a gd day to me, other than the sprain... :)

:: Level up~! ::

finally... managed to fix jason's diy pc and get it ready to log on nus net... yesh~! this is the 6th diy pc dat i assembled since 2002... my goodness, this is also my 1st time fixing a mainboard with raid... since last monday, where i see all the parts lying inside their respective boxes. to now, all of them are working as a whole on top of jason's pgp desk... this baby has given me the most trouble so far, out of the 6 babies dat i assembled... however, my experience gained for this baby is the best out of all...

last monday: spent 6hrs... firstly, i spent quite some time getting familiar with all the parts dat jason bought; LCD monitor, casing, MSI mainboard, kingston ram, Pent3GHz cpu, black keyboard & mouse set, 128mB video card, 80Gb maxtor harddisk, tv tuner card, LG dvd burner and LG dvd drive. i guess i din follow him to sim lim to buy the parts, dat's y i spent rather long going thru them. next, jason said dat he wanna learn how to fix a diy pc too, hence the fixing process extended greatly(maybe i explain too much... lol...)... finally, it's time to launch the cpu for the 1st time *took a deep breathe*... everything seems fine except dat the bios is unable to detect the hard disk... oh no~!! i wonder why too & after all, it's my 1st time i'm fixing a SATA hard disk... then we spent 1-2hrs calling frenz & my mentor. sadly, no one could help us... also, i got our final CSC camp 2005 OC dinner at funan... so we gave up in pgp at the time when the buffet starts... we took a cab and i dropped jason at harbourfront... right away, i headed towards funan... out of my expectation, i encountered a traffic jam... sian, the cab driver has no choice but to take a detour and at last, reached funan... it was $16 on the meter!! from sch to funan only... i met up with the rest of the OCs at 7:30pm, many of them are already full. from the way, some of them looked at me, tells me dat they are thinking "wahz! PD is late for 2hrs!!" (as usual)... sianz... i also dun want it to happen too... :( juz too sway liao... still, i made use of the reminding time we have to talk to everyone who were presented... when we parted, some of them jokingly said... see u all at next foc camp... this statement was meant to be a joke, but somehow scratched my heart alittle... CSC camp brought all of us together for 6 months and 2 of them (2 APD of coz...) even worked with me for 9months, suddenly everything has to come to an end... oh well, hope dat the next camp OC would be as bonded as us... :) the end of this OC, marks the starting of new sch term... :)

last wed: went back to sch for a swim alone, but the weather was bad... real bad... so i camped in cs clubrm with Jiakai and Chee Kian... after dat, supposed to meet Jason to finish up the setup... and guess wat, he 4got to bring his transponder(the key to his rm)... in the end, both of us din get to meet... oh well, another bad day of my life, i guess... keke... laughing at how sway my luck was... nuting seem to go right for dat day...

last thurs: went back to jason's rm this time to finish up all the software part. finally, found out dat we need to acitvate the raid connectors from bios, in order to detect the hard disk... yup yup, problem no 1 solved~! next, we got to install all the softwares in too... same as the last time, explained most of what i feel Jason should know to him. some parts were rather tough, coz he didnt get much chances to use any computers during his army days... suddenly, headache no 2 appeared~!! his dvd burner was auto-disabled by winXP and we were unable to enable it. again, we ended the day with another problem left unresolved... coz he got a paper on the next day morning... my luck was still quite bad on today too, my heart been cut into 2 over an incident... oh well, life still goes on... :)

last sat: i was supposed to meet Jason again... but the sleepy head of mine worked too well dat day... think i gathered up too much sleep debts over the past week... at day, either fixing jason's pc problems or going out with csc camp grp2 folks... at night, chatting over msn or playing maple story... think i really got to quit or limit my playing hours for sure now...

sunday nite: we came to a conclusion over the fone dat we need to reformat his pc, so i gave him step by step instructions and he followed wisely... thru the nite, i received abt 10+ calls from him within 4hrs, on how to install all the softwares etc etc... without fail, we ended the day with 1 more problem... he was unable to set up both vpn and domain in his pc. in other words, he is unable to log on the net inside his rm... he was worrying dat we may need to reformat his pc for the 3rd time... lol... i took it easy, coz i know it wun happen... :)

monday: after having fun at settlers and dinner at queensway with some csc camp grp2 folks, jason and i reached his rm at 10pm... lol... within 15mins, i managed to get both vpn and domain fixed... at dat time, i see how super duper sian jason's face was... he seems to be guilty to make me go to his place for something dat he could do himself... well, it's ok to me... overall, this pc of his is 1 of my precious babies... keke... it's does not pinch me at all... :)

once done, we headed toward harbourfront to catch his last train back home... as for me, i will walk home as soon as i can... along the way, i was approached by a PRC (their accents is so easily recognised)... well, she reminded me of Lijie (keke... hope she dun give me the "orh orh" face over this when sch starts... :P) and she seems quite a nice person to me... hanging on her neck, i see a transponder (a key dat is commonly used in nus)... also, from the bus no. she mentioned, i can figure out dat she is likely to be going back to nus. it's 11:35pm and i felt dat it's not safe for a foreigner like her to be left alone at harbourfront and not to forget, she is a female too... so i followed her to the bus interchange to catch the bus dat she wanted to take... to our disappointment, the last bus has left... next, i proposed an alternative bus stop nearby where she can get on other buses to reach somewhere near her hostel too... guess our timing were juz nice, when we reached the bus stop, the right bus came and we parted... my most satisfying reward was a genuine smile from her (ahem...guys, no funny ideas here hor...). all i know is... she is under a student exchange program currently in nus... 3rd yr biz major...staying in PGP blk12... well, dat's all i know abt her, not even her name... hope dat this will leave a gd impression of her to our students ba... :) woah~! wat a long post, i made today... keke... well, it's summary of the week lehz...

You are a Samurai.
You are full of honour and value respect.
You are not really the stereotypical hero, but

also don't belive in mourning all the time and

:: BL1001 - understanding BL... ::

today is the day where actually give some time juz for myself only... all the while, i'm been observing people and things ard me more, rather than sparing some thoughts over my actions and intention... i guess it's part of human nature to see far and think far. after all, we are brought up this way... humans haf been chasing things dat they desires, over things dat they already haf and near...
"If you look at what you do not have in life, you don't have anything.
If you look at what you have in life, you have everything." - from an email...

my thoughts abt humans are like a plate of "char kway tao", unevenly mixed and in a mess... however, it taste good, dun it... keke...

when i was heading home from cs clubrm, i planned out 2 routes in mind... 1st option, is to walk some distance to take 963 or 97 to harbourfront and walk home from dere. 2nd was to walk to KR hall bus stop and take 143, all the way back to home. haf u all noticed something? well, both routes dat i planned out does not need to transit to another bus at all... eg for route 1, i could have taken a bus from harbourfront to home. as for route 2, i could have taken internal nus bus to kr or pgp to catch 143. this allowed me to understand my nature abit better, when i'm alone...(pls note: alone...as i will generate another set of thinking with peers ard).

wat i expand further from my thoughts and actions were... i'm a person who dun like to stay at 1 point waiting alone... i prefer to be on my move or moving while waiting, eh... i think waiting is not a gd choice of word here, anticipating or expecting should be more appropriate... i remembered Yih Hong once told me in nov 2004, dat his lecturer mentioned dat a person can never be waiting and moving at the same time. waiting requires the person to stay at the same point. ha... quite true to me, so i changed my choice of word to anticipate or expect... y i chose expect? eg a father-to-be will be outside the operation room expecting his child-to-be to be borned... so he will always be moving to-and-fro outside the room... so isnt he is moving and expecting at the same time? ok ok... i know this is quite out of the topic, but find it interesting to share here... coz i'm crapping and wasting some of ur time again... keke...

back again, this preference of mine... allows me to zoom down to wat will i get from waiting vs moving while expecting...

1) waiting
- my body can get to rest or less tiring for my legs, unless i'm standing...
- wat i get to see is limited to wat comes near me and around a limited area surround the bus stop.

2) moving while expecting
- my body can get a light workout... burn some fats... keke...
- my area of exposure is greatly expanded and i can roam ard more freedom... everything along the way is more controlled by me, over worrying the bus will just zoom away...
- the only problems imposed will be the barriers dat hinder my path and the time limit (if any) i have to arrive at my next destination.

so by default, i would choose 2 over 1 and it's already programmed into my brain... hence, i would take out 1 juz now. wat i believe in and trying to demostrate here is... every actions done by a human except for love, has his/her reasons. if u r unable to decode the reasons for ur actions, very likely u either failed to read deep into ur mind or u dun understand urself well enough (of coz, for simplicity sake, i only list these 2 currently)... soul-searching with a clear mind, is a gd way to understand urself better... :)

to end, my final choice was to take route 2, as i target myself to reach home by 6:30pm to continue something dat i left pending b4 i left clubrm... when i chose this option becoz the path for me to walk is much shorter and time consumption is less too. eventually, i did reach home at 6:29pm and head straight to my PC... to slight disappointment, i didnt get a chance to carry on with my plan... dat's life i guess... :)

PS: all the facts dat i mentioned above is juz a summary and less formal & descriptive... but if u r interested to discuss with me... u r always free to contact me... :) overall, it's only a blog entry but not a report or thesis...
